Jefferson is a very scenic area and usually has a nice little creek running down through the trees. Once an old mining town, mainly in the 1870s, it is split into two sections – Upper Jefferson and Lower Jefferson. The lower part of town had stores, houses and two mills: the Jefferson and the Sierra Nevada. Upper Jefferson also had some stores, houses, another mill (possibly also called Jefferson, because why not?) and most importantly, the mines for both town sites.
On this visit in 2008, Dan and I were joined by the legendary desert explorers Bill Gossett, his son John and equally legendary ghost town author Stanley Paher. They did a great job of showing us around!
